Ingredients
  

Burger Patties
  • 2 cans black beans drained and dried
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup rolled oats or gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin essential for flavor
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika optional
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder adjust to taste
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil for cooking
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 large egg or flax egg for vegan
Optional Add-ins
  • 1 cup cooked rice or quinoa
  • 1 cup shredded carrots optional
  • 1 cup corn optional
  • 1 medium bell pepper finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chipotle in adobo adjust for spice

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Drain, rinse, and dry the black beans. Mash them in a bowl, leaving some chunky bits.
  2. Sauté onion and garlic in olive oil until soft and translucent.
  3. Combine mashed black beans with sautéed onion, garlic, oats, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, soy sauce, and egg. Mix well.
  4. Divide mixture into 4-5 patties, place them on a plate, cover, and chill for 30 minutes.
Cooking
  1. For pan-frying, heat olive oil over medium heat and cook each patty for 4-5 minutes on each side.
  2. For baking, preheat oven to 375°F and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway.
Serving
  1. Serve patties on buns or over salad, topped with desired toppings.
