Ingredients

Blueberry Base
  • 2 cups blueberries fresh or frozen
  • 0.5 cups sugar can substitute with honey or maple syrup
  • 0.5 cups water
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
Dumplings
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter can substitute with margarine or coconut oil
  • 1 cup cold milk can use almond or oat milk

Equipment

  • Dutch oven
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Gently rinse and dry the blueberries, then place them in a Dutch oven. Sprinkle in the sugar, water, and ground cinnamon (if desired) and stir well.
  2. Turn heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a low simmer for about 5-10 minutes.
  3. In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add in the cold milk to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until a soft, sticky dough forms.
  5. Drop heaping tablespoons of the dumpling dough over the simmering fruit mixture.
  6. Cover the pot tightly with a lid and reduce heat to low. Let the dumplings steam for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  7. After 15 minutes, check the dumplings for doneness; they should be puffed up and cooked through.
  8. Spoon portions of the Blueberry Grunt into bowls and serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
