  • 4 cups potatoes russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thinly
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheese preferably freshly shredded cheddar or mozzarella
  • 1 cup milk full-fat for creaminess
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook for 7–10 minutes until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add finely chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3–4 minutes until translucent.
  4. Sprinkle in salt, pepper, and garlic powder; stir for about 1 minute.
  5. Peel and slice potatoes thinly. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer half of the potato slices at the bottom.
  6. Spread the beef and onion mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  7. Top with the remaining half of the potato slices, seasoning them lightly.
  8. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and melted butter. Pour over the casserole.
  9. Top generously with shredded cheese.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes; uncover and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes until cheese is golden.
  11. Remove from oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
